Attendance
Only seven of our original group attended September 10th's meeting along with the addition of one new lady. She found our little club by a Google search for a ladies fishing club in Citrus County and there we were. By all accounts, she's going to fit right into our gang. A few of the regulars were missing, like Mike, Alice, and Martha Ann, so it was a little on the quiet side that night. Be expecting a bigger group at October's meeting with yet another new face possibly coming on board.
Guest Speaker
Linda Jones, Flotilla Commander for the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in Crystal River was our guest speaker for the evening. The majority of our guest speakers are men simply because boating and fishing are sports that attract more men than women so it was a refreshing change of pace to see a woman in what is typically a man's position, Flotilla Commander.
She began by pointing out to the group that the 12th anniversary of 9/11 was right around the corner and that the Coast Guard and FWC would be making their presence known on the water in preparation for the unexpected. Virginia told the group that, while out fishing in Crystal Bay that past weekend their boat had been boarded and inspected, along with many others in the vicinity,. Now it was clear why.
Linda then gave a brief history of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, when it was founded and how the organization has changed over the decades. This is a support based organization to the US Coast Guard and their main purpose is to educate the public on marine related topics, the most important of which is water/boating safety.
The US Coast Guard Auxiliary offers year-round classes on boating safety and kayak safety.
She also mentioned that they are always looking for volunteers willing to join in and help the cause. If you are interested in learning more about the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, you are welcome to contact her.

Knot Tying Lesson
Since their knot tying instructor (who shall remain nameless) was a disappointing NO SHOW for two meetings straight - and don't even get them started on that subject - the women decided to take matters into their own hands and create a DIY Knot Tying Class. animatedknots.com , a website dedicated to teaching knots of all kinds, would be their virtual instructor and the Albright Special fishing knot would be their first challenge. After learning about the history of this line-to-line knot, they followed the step-by-step instructions from the website and spent the next twenty minutes practicing. There were a lot of unintended knots and a lot of laughs during that twenty minute span but most of them got the idea. Now they were sent home with homework to practice that knot because at October's meeting, somebody's name will be pulled out of a hat and asked to demonstrate their ability to the rest of the women. If they can tie it, then they win something. Someone has generously donated some gifts to use as prizes so that's where it will start.
